Doctor Chris Miller Talks about Oral Surgery

The number one reason why we do oral surgery is because there's a disease process there, and the first thing you need to do is get rid of the thing that's causing the disease process or clean it up in some way. So yeah, oral surgery is the method that we need to do in order to take care of that, but we can do it very comfortably. I don't like my patients to be uncomfortable.

It makes me uncomfortable, so I tell my patients their best ally during the appointment is their left hand. So if something comes up, their left hand should come up. We address it almost immediately.

But yeah, oral surgery, sometimes that's just the fact of life. We've got something that is non-recoverable, non-restorable, and at that point, that's what we need to start transitioning to. Okay, let's take care of this and then start talking about restoring you.

So it is the first step sometimes in restoring you back to health.

Your Surgery Will Go Smoothly With Our Expertise

You'll appreciate that we take a whole-body approach to oral surgery. Your dentist will not just consider your immediate needs, but also your long-term oral health goals.

We will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan to give you the healthy smile you deserve.

Rest assured, we take surgery seriously and only recommend it if necessary. You will fully understand your options and feel confident in your dentist's treatment recommendations.

It's our goal you won't have to visit an outside oral surgeon for these procedures. If necessary, oral sedation is available if you feel nervous during your appointment.

Relieve Pain & Maintain Your Oral Health

Depending on your smile needs, your surgical options include:

  • Extractions - If your tooth is too damaged to be saved, an extraction can protect your oral health and prevent damage to nearby teeth. Once your tooth is removed, your dentist will discuss your replacement options.
  • Bone Grafts - If your jawbone is too weak to support implants, bone grafting can help create a strong foundation. Your dentist will place bone material in the necessary area to strengthen your jaw.
  • Ridge Augmentation - After tooth loss, the jawbone may begin to deteriorate. A ridge augmentation restores the natural contours of your jaw to prepare you for implants or to give your face a more attractive appearance.
  • Sinus Lift - In some cases, the sinuses may need to be lifted to create more space for dental implant placement in the upper jaw. Your dentist will ensure this area will support your implants.

You’ll Feel at Ease During Surgery

Surgery can seem overwhelming, but our team will make sure you are completely at ease during your appointment. Here are a few of the ways we do that:

  • Relaxing Atmosphere - When you walk into our office, you'll feel welcomed by our friendly team. You will also benefit from our private care rooms.
  • Cozy Amenities - You can relax with a pillow or blanket during your appointment. Headphones are also available to block out the sounds of our equipment. These are just a few of the ways we make you feel at home.
  • Advanced Technology - Your dentist will use state-of-the-art technology, such as digital X-rays and intraoral cameras to plan your treatments. CEREC also allows us to create many restorations right here in our office.
  • Caring Team - Our team works together to make sure your dental care is top-notch. We listen to your needs and take the time to get to know you. Personalized care matters a lot to us, and it shows.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oral Surgery

What can I eat after oral surgery?

For two or three days after your surgery, we advise eating soft foods and liquids. Foods like yogurt, soup, pudding, ice cream, and protein shakes are ideal. It's wise to avoid spicy, acidic, crunchy, and tough foods for about a week to protect your recovery.

When would I need oral surgery?

If a tooth is severely damaged or is affecting other teeth, it often needs to be extracted. Teeth removal can also be necessary to prepare for dentures or other dental restorations. When needed, we'll advise a bone graft or similar procedure to strengthen your jaw for dental implants.

When can I exercise after oral surgery?

For the first 24 hours after your oral surgery, you should not exercise at all. Doing too much too fast can actually create problems and prolong healing. Overexertion can loosen the blood clot from an extraction site and cause a painful condition known as dry socket. After the first 24 hours, limit your exercise to low-impact activities for several more days.

I am SO glad I found Renew Dental Arts! My previous experience with the dentist was fine but nothing special. Dr Studebaker has amazing bedside manner, took extra care and time to diagnose my tooth issue, and carried out the procedure with professionalism, integrity, and kindness. I feel so well taken care of here. Also, I really appreciate the quantitative way of discussing ways to improve dental hygiene. Instead of vague "brush and floss!" the techs use special gel to show you where plaque builds up and they actually treat the gingivitis. I'm in my 30s and feel like I actually understand how to take care of my teeth for the first time thanks to Renew Dental Arts.
